Uruguay earned their first win of the tournament after a convincing 8-1 victory over Cuba. Agustina Taborda’s deliveries on penalty corners were in excellent form as Uruguay scored six of their goals on set pieces.
In the opening quarter Uruguay scored on the first quarter as Taborda’s shot created a second-change opportunity for Teresa Viana to finish the rebound in the second minute of play. It wasn’t until the end of the quarter that Uruguay were able to beat Cuba keeper Yurismailis Garcia again Viana finished another penalty corner to give Uruguay the 2-0 lead.
In the second quarter Uruguay doubled their lead two minutes apart on two identical penalty corner executions. Taborda’s low flicks up the middle of the circle were perfectly deflected in to the net by Camila Piazza for Uruguay to grab a 4-0 lead. Cuba had a near chance to get on the board when a hard hit across the goal by Jennifer Martinez flew under the sticks of both Yuraima Vera and Jessica Ortiz at the far post. Clementina Cristiani continued the scoring for Uruguay, this time a hard shot in to the turf and up in to the net for a 5-0 advantage. Taborda added one more before half time on a penalty corner flick that hit Garcia’s pad and deflected in to give Uruguay the six goal margin by half time.
In the second half Soledad Villar deflected another Agustina flick through the middle to lift Uruguay up by seven in the 39th minute. Cuba had a good run by Yuraima Vera down the left side but she couldn’t quite connect with her team mate Yunia Milanes in the Uruguay circle. Cuba had a penalty corner chance in the final moments of the third quarter but Vera’s drag flick was saved by a diving Constance Schmidt-Liermann in the Uruguay goal.
Cuba were able to break the shut out in the 54th minute after a gritty effort from Vera. A sideline hit that ended up with a hard pass in to the circle fell kindly for Cuba’s Yunia Milanes. A bouncing shit beat Schmidt-Liermann at the far post to get Cuba on the board. It was a consolation goal though, as Uruguay finished the game with the 8-1 win.
