6 | Pool B | 12:00pm | CHI - USA | 2 - 4 | Official | x 2 |
The USA scored four goals in a six-minute span in the fourth quarter to erase a two-goal deficit and beat Chile 4-2 in pool-play action. Erin Matson's back-hand smash triggered the momentum shift despite Chile controlling the earlier parts of the game. USA move to the top of Pool B with two wins. Despite the loss, Chilean’s Denise Krimerman hit a milestone 150 internationals, while her team mate Maria Maldonado celebrated her 50th.
Chile came out with a confident disposition to challenge the two-time reigning Pan American Games champions, USA. Although Chile controlled much of the first half it was the Americans who had the first set piece opportunities of the game. Kat Sharkey took the hit from the top of the battery but Chile’s Claudia Schuler made the save with ease. Chile’s first look at goal came from the speedy Manuela Urroz who sprung Josefa Villalabeitia but USA keeper Kelsey Bing challenged well. Just before the first quarter whistle Chile earned a penalty corner. Sofia Walbaum’s drag flick was saved by Bing but the ball bounced out to Consuelo de las Heras who one-timed the ball in to the net to give Chile the all-important first goal.
The second quarter was a stale mate as both sides gave little room heading in to the circles. Chile had the best chance of the quarter when Maria Maldonado’s speed allowed her a free shot at goal but Bing steered the ball wide to leave the game still 1-0 in Chile’s favour at half time.
In the 36th minute Urroz charged down the left side of the field and up against two USA defenders earned Chile a penalty corner. The option was perfectly executed as Walbaum’s low drag up the middle found Urroz’s stick for a redirection under the cross bar and a 2-0 Chile lead. Ashley Hoffman had an opportunity get the Americans on the board on a penalty corner but her drag flick lacked speed and Schuler cleared it with little trouble. Sharkey had another chance moments later but her forehand blast sailed past the far post.
Finally after some continued pressure by the USA a fortunate bounce through a crowd of blue left Erin Matson alone. Matson made no mistake pounding a back-hand shot that flew under the bar to get USA on the board, trailing 2-1. It was the momentum shift they need as right off the push back USA forced their way through the circle and Lauren Moyer tapped in the loose ball to draw the game level 2-2. It was downhill for Chile after that as Krimerman was sent off with a yellow card with nine minutes to go in the game.
Continuing the momentum, the USA earned a penalty corner and this time were able to execute. Sharkey faked over top of a pass to leave Ali Froede all the time to fire a sweep hit towards goal. The ball hit a Chile defender and deflected in over a diving Schuler for a 3-2 USA lead. Sharkey blasted a fourth goal in the for USA to give her side the 4-2 victory.
