3 | Pool B | 2:00pm | USA - MEX | 5 - 0 | Official | x 2 |
Although the USA maintained most of the possession from the get-go, Mexico was not going to roll over for the world-ranked No. 13 Americans. Both teams took time to settle and the USA had their first penalty corner attempt in the 8th minute but Ali Froede’s sweep hit deflected high over the net. The Americans had three sequential penalty corners but between captain Kat Sharkey and Froede they were unable to test Mexico keeper Jesus Castillo leaving the first quarter scoreless at the first break.
Mexico earned two penalty corners to start the second quarter and the second attempt, shot by Michel Navarro, was saved by USA keeper Kelsey Bing. Navarro had another penalty corner attempt after a clever fake play at the top of the circle but that too was blocked by Bing. Finally for the USA Froede’s hard penalty corner sweep was redirected effortlessly by Danielle Grega in the 27th minute for a 1-0 USA lead heading into half time.
On USA’s fourth penalty corner attempt of the third quarter Kat Sharkey blasted a shot low and hard to the right of the goal and Amanda Magadan calmly redirected the ball low past Castillo for a 2-0 lead. USA’s Anna Dessoye had an open gift for goal in the 37th minute but she pulled her shot and the ball ricocheted around for several American forwards to tap in. Lauren Moyer was the final recipient as she knocked in the bouncing ball to an unguarded net for a 3-0 USA lead. Erin Matson put away a tough angle shot following a rebound on a drag flick from Ashley Hoffman to give the USA the 4-0 go ahead just one minute later. Hoffman made it 5-0 in the 40th minute after she buried a penalty stroke resulting from a USA forward getting knocked over just inside the circle. Mexico’s Navarro and Karen Orozco traded shots on four penalty corners at the third quarter whistle but neither was able to capitalize.
In the final quarter the USA continued to go at goal but their penalty corner attempts fell short, while Mexico’s defence, led by Orozco, continued to keep the Americans outside the perimeter. The USA’s performance seemed tentative but the result still followed through as USA slide to the top of the standings with a 5-0 victory over Mexico.
