Match Report

Arlette Estrada scored two goals to propel Mexico to a 4-0 victory over hosts Peru in Day 3 action at the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima. Chiara Conetta had a solid performance in goal to keep a spirited Peru team pushing for their first goal of the tournament.

A scoreless opening quarter was a large credit to Conetta. Mexico held Peru mostly in their half but were unable to find the back of the net. In the 11th minute Mexico’s Nathalia Nava had a close-range shot but Conetta stretched to make the save. In the final minute of the quarter Fernanda Oviedo had a back-hand shot that Conetta reached to put over the cross bar. Seconds later Fernanda Oviedo had another back-hand shot, this time beating Conetta, but the ball crossed the line just after the horn leaving the game 0-0.

In the second quarter Mexico’s Ana Juarez had a glorious shot but again Conetta set the packed home crowd into a roar with another save. In the 25th minute Oviedo was into the circle all on her own and Conetta stood tall to deny her. Mexico had three penalty corners at the end of the half. Mexico was able to break through on the third one after Michel Navarro’s shot was blocked by Peru’s Yurandi Quino. The ball bounced up and in to traffic before Estrada was there to knock it in and give Mexico a 1-0 lead heading in to half time.

Mexico had several chances to expand on their lead including a penalty corner in the opening minutes of the second half. Quino was pivotal running out for Peru, blocking another drag flick attempt from Mexican captain Navarro. Meixco had a free play chance when Maribel Acosta smashed a ball across the goal looking for Oviedo but the ball deflected just wide of the goal. In the 39th minute Mexico was able to capitalize when a hard hit from Acosta found Estrada unmarked at the top of the circle. Estrada fired a shot on her reverse to lift Mexico 2-0.

Mexico had a series of corners but Peru did well to keep Conetta’s job to a minimum. Peru certainly had their share of attack as the energy and skill from Malen Moccagatta continued to lead the charge up front. Peru’s Nicole Cueva had a bouncing shot towards the Mexican goal but keeper Jesus Castillo was able to kick the ball clear. Oviedo and Karen Gonzalez added two more goals for Mexico en route to a 4-0 victory.

With win Mexico are now 1-1 in pool-play standings, while Peru fall to 0-2. The third pool-play day of games continues on August 2.
