Match Report

Mexico opened the scoring in just the third minute of play when Juan Sosa redirected a pass that came across the circle. Mexico controlled the game with their speed but Peru showed how much they have progressed matching Mexico through midfield. Peru had penalty corner chances in the first quarter but shots from Rodrigo Diaz Espinosa and Fernando Lopez were turned away by Jose Hernandez in goal for Mexico.

The teams battled through a scrappy affair in the second quarter as the game got more physical and Peru pushed for an equalizer. It wasn’t until the final minute of the half when Paco Aguilar charged the top of the circle only to be taken down by Peru defender Christopher Knight Arce. The resulting penalty corner allowed Aguilar to double Mexico’s lead heading in to half time. Aguilar beat Felix Mafferetti glove side with a confident drag flick.

Mexico put Peru under immense pressure forcing shot after shot on Mafferetti. In the 33rd minute a fourth rebound attempt fell to Aguilar who squeezed the ball in from a tight angle to lift Mexico 3-0. Peru had a chance to get on the board again in the 38th minute and the flick from Diaz Espinosa was stopped by Hernandez but bounced just past the post. Mexico’s Luis Villegas put in a rebound off another Aguilar penalty corner flick to make it 4-0 before the end of the third quarter.

It wasn’t until the fourth quarter that Peru’s persistence paid off. A penalty corner strike from Diaz Espinosa hit Hernandez in the pads and bounced up. A waiting Johannes Valakivi knocked the ball out of the air and in to the goal for Peru’s first goal of the tournament. Mexico added two more within a one minute span from each of  Alexander Sandoval and Sosa. Peru did not go down without a fight as they earned a penalty corner in the 55th minute. This time, a different routine as the straight shot was faked to allow Fernando Lopez to find the stick of Diaz Espinosa for the perfect redirection into the mesh much to the delight of another packed Peru crowd.

Luis Villegas and Jorge Estrada each added a goal for Mexico to earn the 8-2 victory a midst Peru fans cheering their team through a proud performance.
