Match Report

The USA stunned hosts Peru with a 16-0 win to wrap up Day 2 at the Pan American Games. Deegan Huisman scored five goals, while four others notched two.

The Americans opened the scoring on their first penalty corner less than two minutes in to the game. Aki Kaeppeler’s flick beat Peru keeper Felix Mafferetti glove side and that was the start of the scoring frenzy. Off the push back the USA were able to feed Pat Harris who made no mistake on his back hand to double the lead. From there, Huisman got on the board for his first before Sean Cicchi buried a low flick that rang off the back boards to make it 4-0 just seven minutes in. Alberto Montilla made it 5-0 on another back-hand shot after he was left alone at the top of the circle. Huisman pocketed two more goals to make it 7-0 as the USA danced through Peru with ease.

In the second quarter Peru let in only one goal. Keeper Mafferetti made back-to-back saves in the opening minutes. Mafferetti stood tall against another Kaeppeler drag flick moments later before denying a blast from USA’s Jonathan Orozco to keep the Americans off the board. The USA finally broke through in the 26th minute as Cicchi’s back-hand shot made it 8-0.

Despite the score margin Peru continued to battle until the end and it was much to the delight the packed stands of home fans.

USA continued on their scoring tear with three more goals in the third quarter including two for Paul Singh and a second for Montilla. A five goal quarter wrapped up the game as Huisman added two to finishe with a team-high five goals, while Tom Barrat and Kaeppeler also tallied to make it 16-0.

The victory puts USA at the top of Pool B with Canada, who they will face on August 1 in their second pool-play match up.
