Peru scored their first goals of their first-ever appearance at the Pan American Games in their final game against Cuba. Three goals, including two from Marina Montes, lifted the hosts Peru 3-2 over Cuba to finish seventh overall.
Cuba dominated the opening minutes earning a penalty corner just two minutes in. A blast from Sunaylis Nikle blew by the right post. Peru showed great energy despite playing in their seventh game and some good clears from keeper Chiara Conetta propelled the home team forward. In the 10th minute hard work from Ana Moccagatta allowed her a back-hand shot on goal. Cuba keeper Yuriksmailis Garcia made the save but the rebound fell perfectly for Montes who tapped the ball in for a 1-0 Peru lead.
Cuba had two more penalty corners in the 12th minute. The first shot by Nikle was blocked and on the second attempt Yuraima Vera’s flick was saved by Conetta. A rebound shot from Yunia Milanes was also saved. Cuba finally found their equalizer in the 14th minute when Vera tapped in a cross pass from Milanes to draw the game 1-1.
Almost to the surprise of their own team Peru was able to pull ahead again on a penalty corner. Marianella Alvarez sent a low flick in to the bottom corner to send the crowd yet again in to fits as Peru held a 2-1 lead. A scoreless second quarter left Peru ahead by one heading in to half time.
In the third quarter Peru pulled ahead in the 36th minute as Cuba was short Nikle who was sitting for a yellow card. Another penalty corner goal pushed Peru up by two. This time Alvarez’s flick was blocked but Montes picked up the ball right in front of Garcia and curled to find space and bury a third goal for Peru.
Trailing by two, Cuba pushed for another goal and they were successful as Leticia Fernanda scored in the 44th minute. It was not enough as Peru crowded their circle and denied further circle entries to hang on to the 3-2 win and ultimately finish seventh at their first appearance at the Pan American Games.
