Match Report

A five-goal performance from Teresa Viana Ache helped Uruguay lead from start to finish as they cruise past Peru in the first consolation semifinal of women’s competition on Day 9. Uruguay ran away with the game scoring six goals in the third quarter to finish with a 14-0 win.

Uruguay started scoring over the young Peru team in just the third minute as Viana Ache’s solo efforts netted the opening goal. Uruguay had two failed penalty corner attempts, the second of which led to a fast break out for Peru. Forward Marina Montes as one-on-one with Uruguay keeper Constance Schmidt-Liermann but Montes lost control of the ball in the circle. Pilar Oliveros made it 2-0 when she walked the ball in to the circle with no pressure and on her back-hand beat Chiara Conetta in goal.

The Cimarronas added four goals in the second quarter including a penalty corner shot shot from Agustina Taborda and a blast from Manuela Vilar. Uruguay led 6-0 at half time.

The scoring continued in the third quarter and Ana Palomino subbed in for Conetta in the Peru goal after Uruguay put in three goals in the first three two minutes. Viana Ache netted her third of the game as she batted in a rebound that came of Conetta’s pads in the 32nd minute, while Anastasia Olave scored on Palomino to make it 10-0 in the 35th minute.

Viana Ache added two more goals in the quarter to bring her game total to five, while Uruguay headed in to the final quarter up 12-0. A second goal for Oliveros and a third for Taborda brought the final score to 14-0.

Uruguay will now await the winner of Mexico vs. Cuba to play for 5/6th place.

This is the first appearance for the Peru women in the Pan American Games who qualify as hosts. For Uruguay, they will be looking to match their 2015 appearance where they finished fifth. This is also Uruguay’s fourth appearance at the Pan American Games with their best placing being a bronze medal in 2003.
