Match Report

Chile scored nine goals in the second half to dominate Peru by a final score of 13-0. The Diablas had three goals from each of Fernanda Villagran and Manuela Urroz to secure their first victory of the tournament.

Chile opened the scoring in the fourth minute of play despite contending with a boisterous home crowd cheering on Peru. Denise Krimerman found Maria Maldonado who redirected the ball in to lift Chile 1-0. Less than one minute later Chile doubled their lead on a penalty corner. Krimerman’s strike from the top bounced off a Peru defender and was knocked out of the air and into the net by Sofia Walbaum for a 2-0 Chile lead. Peru keeper Chiara Conetta made a good save on a deflection on a Chilean penalty corner, but a sequential corner resulted in Fernanda Villagran’s drag flick rippling the mesh and a 3-0 advantage for Chile. Some fearless defending from Peru captain Maria Jose Fermi denied two dangerous Chile attacks heading in to the first break.

Chile went up 4-0 on a penalty stroke taken by Villagran after another Krimerman penalty corner shot hit a Peru foot on the goal line. The young Peru team showed glimmers of attack through the efforts of Malen Moccagatta and Camila Mendez but it was not enough to penetrate the circle of the No. 15-ranked Chileans. Urroz knocked in a bouncing ball to score Chile’s fifth goal before heading in to half time.

Conetta had the crowd on their feet when she made a diving stick save on a penalty corner shot by Chile’s Walbaum at the start of the third quarter. In the 35th minute Urroz crafted her way in to the circle and was hauled  down sending Villagran to the spot. Villagran scored her third goal on the penalty stroke to give Chile a 6-0 lead. Much to the delight of the fans, Moccagatta had a near chance for Peru as she dangled her way along the baseline and across the Chile goal but her shot went wide of Chilean keeper Claudia Schuler’s goal. In the other end Garcia calmly blasted the ball past Conetta for a 7-0 Chile lead. Chile added four more goals thanks to Consuelo de las Heras, Kim Jacob, Urroz, Maldonado and Garcia to close out the game 13-0 over Peru.
