In the second consolation semifinal Trinidad and Tobago beat Mexico 3-0 with all three goals coming in the second half. Teague Marcano scored two goals, while brother Tariq Marcano added a third.
A scoreless opening half was not without chances. Both teams struggled to get their shots on net in a scrappy affair that had both keepers Karlos Stephen, of Trinidad and Tobago, and Jose Hernandez, of Mexico, ready for what could come.
Trinidad and Tobago had more of the attack, driving Mexico’s circle but moving passes just wide of the post. Juan Sosa fed a slicing pass to Jorge Estrada who drew Mexico’s first penalty corner of the game in the final minute of the first quarter. Yamil Mendez laid the ball off to Alejandro Mendez but the low shot was saved easily by Stephen.
In the second quarter, Paco Aguilar had a one-on-one with Stephen but lost control of the ball. Trinidad and Tobago earned their first penalty corner in the 20th minute but a Kwan Browne drag flick rocketed low and wide of the right post. Back the other way Sosa had no pressure on his back-hand shot but Stephen made the save.
Mexico had another penalty corner chance in the third quarter but Aguilar’s drag flick went low and wide of the net, the story for Mexico all game. After a series of shots Trinidad and Tobago’s Teague Marcano had his back to the net but in a low spin, curled and beat Hernandez past his left foot. Alexander Sandoval had a chance to draw his side level but the Mexican forward’s back-hand attempt sailed wide from close range.
Trinidad and Tobago netted two goals in the 47th minute but that didn’t stop Mexico. A penalty corner in the 47th minute looked promising but Aguilar’s flick was saved by the foot of Stephen.
Trinidad and Tobago’s 3-0 win over Mexico secures them a spot in the 5/6th place game where they will face Cuba. The game will be a rematch from the teams’ opening pool-play match where Cuba won 3-2.
