Match Report

Chile came away with a 2-0 victory over Mexico in the second quarter-final of the day. Felipe Renz and Sven Richter scored for the Chileans who fought off a passionate Mexican side that had lots of second half attack but no conversion.

An uneventful opening quarter between Chile and Mexico was due to the gritty defense in both circles. Jose Hernandez in goal for Mexico fielded more of the attack then Chile’s Adrian Henriquez but neither were really called to test until the second quarter.

Chile continued to push in to the Mexican 23-m area but struggled to find a clean entry in to the circle. A bouncing ball in to the goal area allowed Felipe Renz to flip the ball high over Hernandez for a 1-0 Chile lead in the 22nd minute.

Mexico didn’t seem phased, earning a penalty corner in the 29th minute off a great pass from Paco Aguilar to Ruben Martinez in the Chile circle. Aguilar’s low delivery to Erik Hernandez at the far post was on point but the ball ricocheted off the post. Moments later Aguilar smashed a hard ball across the circle and it tipped off the toe of a Chile defender for another Mexico penalty corner. This time, Alejandro Mendez took the flick but it was swatted away by the glove of Henriquez. The game remained 1-0 for Chile at half time.

Mexico pushed hard with all the attack and no reward. Right out of the break Hernández earned Mexico a penalty corner but the shot from Alejandro Mendez was blocked. Mexico had another penalty corner this time from Aguilar to Alexander Sandoval but the shot was saved. Chile’s Nicolas Renz had a chance to double his side’s lead on a back-hand shot but Hernandez batted it away with confidence.

In the fourth quarter Mexico had two penalty corners, both failed to even test Chile keeper Henriquez. Although Mexico seemed to carry most of the momentum it was Chile that capitalized on one of their few chances of the second half. A penalty corner flick from Nicolas Renz hit Mendez standing on the goal line to award Chile a penalty stroke. Sven Richter made no mistake from the stroke mark to give Chile the insurance marker and a 2-0 lead.

Mexico’s Aguilar had one last attempt on a penalty corner but his flick was saved well by Henriquez to book Chile a ticket in to the semifinals. Chile will play the winner of Trinidad and Tobago vs. Canada.
