It was September 2016 when West Vancouver Field Hockey Club (WVFHC) accepted the invitation to host the third and final women’s HWL Round Two event in April 2017. It was not a winning chapter for Pan American teams in medal rounds today as India edged Chile 3-1 in a shootout to take the title at the 2017 Gryphon Hockey World League 2 in West Vancouver, Canada. Belarus converted on corners to finish third over Uruguay, while Canada dropped Mexico to finish fifth. More

Canadian weather was at its finest and wettest and all teams combatted torrential rain and a pooling field but the competition level was high just as the stakes were. India was firing on set pieces to eliminate Belarus and will now join Chile in the final, after Las Diablas edged Uruguay in the other semifinal. More

Every international tournament is an opportunity for umpires to gain experience on the world stage and just as players eagerly await selections to earn caps, so do officials. The Gryphon Hockey World League Round 2 women’s event in West Vancouver has offered seven PAHF umpires an opportunity to officiate throughout the nine-day competition. More

Uruguay and Belarus edged out wins the quarter-finals to secure spots in the semifinals against Chile and India, respectively. Uruguay hung on to a 2-1 advantage over Mexico, while Belarus scored four unanswered goals to overcome a three-goal deficit and ultimately dismiss hosts Canada. More

A last-minute goal from Uruguay’s Maria Teresa Viana Ache lifted the Cimarronas 3-2 over Belarus to ultimately nab second place in Pool A. Chile continued their clean sheet with a 2-0 win over Mexico to top Pool B and earn a bye into the semifinals, while Canada finishes second in Pool B after their 12-0 win over Trinidad and Tobago. Day 6 featured a series of close matches to determine final rankings, with two of the games needing a penalty shootout to separate the teams and the other two decided by a 1-goal margin. With the finalists already qualified for Round 3, only Russia was ranked high enough to earn qualification through a 3rd place finish, but with ranking points a consideration, there was enough at stake to keep each team interested. More
