At the end of the first day of the 2014 Central American and Caribbean Games (Women) Cuba and Trinidad & Tobago top Pool A and Pool B respectively.

In Pool A, Cuba beat Jamaica 4-0 in their first game of the Tournament scoring 3 goals in the first 13 minutes of the match. Marisbel SIERRA got the opening goal in the 4th minute, 6 minutes later Helec CARTA added to the total and Marisbel SIERRA then scored her second goal of the game in minute 13.

Jamaica’s defensive performance improved as the game progressed however they were unable to create many scoring opportunities and conceded a 4th goal in the 37th minute which was scored by Cuba’s Yunia MILANES. Jamaica ended the day at the bottom of Pool A.

In the other Pool A Match, the host country Mexico beat a very spirited Barbados team 2-0. Both teams were guilty of not converting any of the numerous penalty corners they earned in the first half. Mexico however scored two quick goals in the 2nd half with Captain Michel NAVARRO scoring in the 42nd minute and 44th minute.

Barbados put the host country under pressure in the closing stages of the second half but like in the first half they were not able put away any of the penalty corners they earned. Mexico ended the day second in Pool A with Barbados in third position.

In Pool B, Trinidad & Tobago women overcame a slow start against Bermuda to win 5-0. Bermuda’s resolute defending held Trinidad at bay until Kristin THOMPSON put away a penalty corner rebound to score Trinidad’s 1st goal in the 30th minute. Kayla BRAITHWAITE made it 2-0 to Trinidad five minutes later to end the 1st half 2-0.

Bermuda found it difficult to breach their opponent’s defence and Trinidad put the game out of reach in the second half with Dana-Lee de GANNES and Briana GOVIA scoring two quick field goals in the 45th and 47th minute respectively. Orie TROTMAN sealed the game for Trinidad by scoring her team’s 5th goal in the 51st minute. Bermuda found themselves at the bottom of Pool B at the end of the day’s play.

The 2nd Pool B match saw Dominican Republic beating Guyana 4-1. Dominican Republic’s Agustina BIROCHO scored two quick goals in the 30th minute and 33rd minute and this score held until the end of the first half.

Guyana despite being behind, played with a lot of courage and determination but Dominican Republic’s Magalys ORTEGA added to her team’s tally with a field goal in the 45th minute and five minutes later Lucia NAVAMUEL made it 4-0. Guyana’s determination was rewarded as Kerensa FERNANDES scored her team’s only goal in the 69th minute.

Dominican Republic and Guyana ended the day in 2nd and 3rd place respectively in Pool B at the end of Day 1.
