Barquisimeto, Venezuela – August 9-15

 

Day 5 – Men – Pool A – Peru vs. Argentina: 1-2

In the first half, the match between Peru and Argentina was an aggressive battle. Argentina had slightly more shots on goal and penalty corners, but that were constantly blocked by Peru’s keeper Felix MAFFERETTI. Peru’s Fabrizio CORNO scored first in the 8th minute, but Argentina quickly tied the match 1-1 off a penalty corner goal by Gaston LUNA. With either team able to score again, the score at halftime remained 1-1. The second half continued the fight for possession from the first half. Peru received the first penalty corner of the second half, but the shot was blocked by Argentina’s keeper Alejandro GARBUGLIA. Argentina countered with a penalty corner, but the shot was again blocked by MAFFERETTI. Midway through the second half, Argentina began to control the match. Argentina nearly scored again, but the penalty corner shot hit the left side of the goal. Argentina maintained its attacking intensity and Leandro LEOTTA scored a field goal in the 31st minute to take the 2-1 lead over Peru. On the restart, Peru came back and was awarded a few penalty corners, but could not capitalize. With seven minutes remaining in the match, after saving a hard shot, Argentina substituted GARBUGLIA with their other keeper, Omar VIDAL. In the final minutes of the match, Argentina’s penalty corner was blocked by MAFFERTETTI. Peru’s attacking opportunities fell short and Argentina came away with the 2-1 victory.

Day 5 – Men – Pool B – United States vs. Mexico: 12-0

In the Pool B match between the United States and Mexico, Mexico was looking for its first tournament win; and the United States was looking to keep its top spot in Pool B. At the beginning of the match, both teams battled for possession. The United States had more attacking opportunities; and scored first midway through the half. Soon after, Patrick COTA had a chance to increase the United States’ lead, but his penalty stroke was blocked by Mexico’s keeper Luis Manuel LARES SILVA. In the 14th minute, Patrick HARRIS increased the United States’ lead to 2-0. A turnover by Mexico at the re-start lead to an immediate third goal for the United States. The United States continued to assert its dominance with a penalty corner goal in the 18th minute. Down four goals at the half, Mexico looked to prevent the United States from scoring further. Yet, a tip in goal by Patrick HARRIS in the 25th minute made the score 5-0. Midway through the second half, Mexico was able to generate some attack, but the shots were blocked by the United States’ keeper Jason WELLINGS. Sean HARRIS of the United States scored a field goal; making the score 6-0. Soon after, Moritz RUNZI had a chance to further increase the United States’ lead, but his penalty stroke was blocked by LARES SILVA. The United States continued its rapid scoring, however, and went up 9-0 following goals by Robert SCHILLING, Sean HARRIS, and Patrick HARRIS. A penalty stroke by Patrick HARRIS gave the United States a ten goal advantage over Mexico. Two more goals by RUNZI and KRAUSS made the score 12-0. Mexico, however, did not let up and was awarded a penalty corner just before the end of the match. With Mexico unable to convert the penalty corner the final score remained 12-0 in favour of the United States.

Day 5 – Men – Pool A – Canada vs. Venezuela: 10-1

In the last Pool A match, host Venezuela was looking for its first tournament win. Canada scored first. Goals by Nicholas HIGNELL and Jonathan ROBERTS made the score 3-0 and Canada asserted its dominance over the match. Venezuela had few attacking opportunities in the first half of the match. A penalty corner goal in the final minute of the half made the score 4-0 at halftime. Canada began the second half like it did the first and scored first in the half in the 27th minute off a Brandon BARBER field goal. BARBER scored again one minute later. Venezuela’s defense stayed strong and prevented Canada from scoring again until four minutes later in the 32nd minute off another ROBERTS goal; making the score 7-0. After Canada scored its seventh goal of the match, Venezuela was able to get into its attacking area, but could not capitalize. Venezuela’s persistence throughout the match was rewarded by a field goal by Yhosvany HERNANDEZ in the 36th minute. Yet, Canada quickly seized back the momentum of the match and scored another right off the re-start. Soon after, goals by Tyler BRANCO and another by BARBER gave Canada a ten goal lead over host Venezuela. With its 10-0 win over host Venezuela, Canada secured the top spot in Pool A.

Day 5 – Men – Pool B – Uruguay vs. Trinidad and Tobago: 0-2

In the last match of pool play for the Men’s Indoor Pan American Championship, Uruguay and Trinidad and Tobago played. Trinidad and Tobago was playing for the top spot in Pool B. Given the United States’ big win over Mexico, Trinidad and Tobago would have to score a lot of goals against Uruguay. Trinidad and Tobago took an early 1-0 lead off a field goal by Mickell PIERRE in the 3rd minute. Trinidad and Tobago continued to have most of the possession throughout the first half. A tough Uruguayan defense, however, prevented Trinidad and Tobago from scoring again, especially off many penalty corners. Thus, the score remained 1-0 at halftime. The second half was more even between the teams; with Uruguay having more attacking opportunities. For much of the second half, play remained a fierce battle. Trinidad and Tobago took a two goal lead over Uruguay off a penalty corner goal by Wayne LEGERTON in the 35th minute. Both teams prevented each other from scoring in the last five minutes of the half. Trinidad and Tobago won 2-0 over Uruguay, but the goal output led them to a second place finish in Pool B.
