Maria Correa scored in the 12^th minute on a penalty corner to give Mexico the 1-0 edge over Cuba to put them in the game for 5/6^th place against Uruguay. The game also marked a special note for captain Michel Navarro who played in her 100^th international match.

Cuba showed great resilience and pressure to make it difficult for Mexico to add an insurance marker. Cuba had their share of attack as Yeskenia Gutierre had a hard blast from outside the circle in the first quarter but her pass just missed the stick of Brizaida Ramos unmarked at the far post of the Mexico goal.

Mexico had a series of penalty corners in the second and third quarter but the Cuba defence led by goalkeeper Yurismailis Garcia made several blocks.

In the third quarter Mexico nearly doubled their lead on a penalty corner. The ball was shot and rebounded to Nathalia Nava but her shot lobbed high and just over the cross bar.

Three-straight corners in the fourth quarter were indicative of Mexico’s ability to generate attack but a lack of execution was credit to the physical presence of Cuba in the circle. Mexico had one more penalty corner opportunity in the final seconds of play but were again unable to beat the Cuba defence.

The 1-0 victory means Mexico advances to the 5/6^th game and will face Uruguay who beat Peru 14-0 in the earlier consolation semifinal. Mexico and Uruguay will play on August 9 at 9:30h, while Peru and Cuba will play for 7/8^th at 15:00h.
