Mexico finished seventh at the 2019 Pan American Games after a 6-0 victory over Peru on the last day of the tournament. Mexico dropped one spot in their appearance at these games following sixth place finishes in 2015 and 2011. Alejandro Mendez scored three goals for Mexico in the win.

In the opening quarter it was Peru that had the majority of the chances. A pass from Antonio Piazza to Fabrizio Corno had Peru in Mexico territory but the pass across the goal flew under the stick of Edson Vera. The home side then had a penalty corner in the 13^th minute but the flick from Sebastian Dennison was saved by Mexico keeper Jose Hernandez.

In the second quarter, Peru still came out with all the attack. Miguel Leon had a hard blast that missed the Mexico net, while another penalty corner resulted in a flick from Daniel Huanca sailing high and wide.

Alexander Sandoval had the first quality chance at goal for Mexico but his back hand soared over the goal. In the 21^st minute Mexico had a penalty corner and Mendez flicked in a hard shot for a 1-0 Mexico lead. Mendez went on to score in identical fashion on a second penalty corner within the minute.

Daniel Castillo added a third goal just before half time as he first-timed a pass from Juan Sosa to make it 3-0 for Mexico.

Peru played well through the third quarter but could not connect up front to break the shutout. Peru had a penalty stroke over turned by video review after Edgar Garcia had been penalized for a hard challenge.

In the 49^th minute Mexico earned a penalty stroke after a penalty corner shot from Mendez was blocked on the line by the body of Peru captain Corno. Francisco Aguilar flicked the ball high and under the cross bar for a 4-0 Mexico lead.

Mexico added two more goals, another penalty corner from Mendez and a free-play goal on a three-on-one by Garcia to make it 6-0 for Mexico.

For Peru, this is their first appearance at the Pan American Games and the experience gained is likely to be just the start for the young hockey program. The venue at Villa María del Triunfo is world class with two pitches and all the infrastructure in place to provide development for hockey and for Peru to host more events. The future is certainly bright for Peru.
