Match Report

Trindad and Tobago held on to a 2-1 advantage over Cuba to earn fifth spot at the 2019 Pan American Games. Marcus James and Teague Marcano each scored in the game, while Cuba’s Iraidys Calderon tallied for Cuba.

Cuba had most of the opportunities to start the game including two penalty corners that were steered away by the Trinidad and Tobago defence. Roger Aguilera nearly got Cuba on the board as he weaved through the circle but keeper Karlos Stephen slid across to stop the shot. Against the rush Trinidad and Tobago’s Shaquille Daniel made a hard pass on a sideline hit to captain Marcus James. James let a back-hand shot rip that hit the glove of Leordan Hernandez but the ball dropped behind him and in to the goal for a 1-0 Trinidad and Tobago lead.

In the second quarter Teague Marcano got the last touch on a high ball coming in to the circle. Marcano’s touch put the ball over Hernandez to make it 2-0 for Trinidad and Tobago. Cuba responded in the 22nd minute when a hard hit from Carlos Cosuegra was deflected at the far post by Calderon. Down by one Cuba continued to push and they were nearly rewarded earning a wide open shot for Maikel Tritzant but his shot was missed. A penalty corner shot for Consuegra blocked by the speedy Kristien Emmanuel to keep Cuba from tying the game.

Cuba continued to knock at the door as they had set piece chances and free play chances but just couldn’t get anything towards goal. Aguilera missed a golden opportunity on a penalty corner rebound but the pass across the goal mouth hit him in the foot as he stood unmarked at the far post.

Tariq Marcano’s flick was saved by the toe of Hernandez on a Trinidad and Tobago penalty corner in the 55th minute. Seconds later Cuba nearly had their equalizer when Calderon stripped Kwan Browne on a 15-meter hit but Calderon sliced the ball wide on his shot.

Cuba was unable to find the tying goal and Trinidad and Tobago took the game 2-1.
