Match Report

Chile secured second spot in Pool A after a 2-0 win over Trinidad and Tobago on Day 6 of the Pan American Games. Martin Rodriguez and Juan Amoroso each got on the board for Chile.

Much like their first two games Trinidad and Tobago had a very spirited attack but couldn’t find conversion when they got into the circle. Kwan Browne had two penalty corner chances in just the fourth minute of play but Chile goalkeeper Adrian Henriquez gloved away the first and his post player Juan Amoroso turned away the second. Chile looked much more organized in their build up to attack as Rodriguez, Axel Troncoso and Sven Richter combined for several plays heading in to the Trinidad and Tobago end but couldn’t muster a shot.

Trinidad and Tobago had a third penalty corner but Teague Marcano couldn’t get the flick off and the rebounding chance for Marcus James hit him in the foot. It was just to Chile’s fortune as an unsuspecting pass in to the circle was redirected slightly by Richter and the ball trickled behind keeper Karlos Stephen. Rodriguez made no mistake in front of the empty net to give Chile a 1-0 cushion entering the second period.

The two teams traded rushes but both seemed to struggle executing a clean strategy to gain the circle. It wasn’t until the 36th minute that Chile were able to force the Trinidad and Tobago defence to concede two penalty corners. On the second, Amoroso turned to his back hand and smashed the ball in to the bottom corner to give Chile the 2-0 go-ahead.

Trinidad and Tobago had their best free play chance in the 40th minute when a ball came across the Chilean circle to a wide open Marcano but his shot was somehow saved by the sliding pads of Henriquez.

Trinidad and Tobago head coach Glen Francis pulled goalkeeper Karlos Stephen with six minutes left in the game looking for their elusive first goal. With the extra field player Trinidad and Tobago was able to pressure Chile and earn a penalty corner. Browne’s low flick echoed off the far post and the rebounding shot from James was well saved by Henriquez.

Chile were not phased by the extra pressure through the final minutes and they stayed composed enough to secure second spot in Pool A with the 2-0 win. Winless Trinidad and Tobago finish fourth in Pool A behind Cuba.
