Match Report

Chile scored one goal in each quarter to earn their first win of the games. Two penalty corner goals from Nicolas Renz and a goal from each of Sven Richter and Fernando Renz put the Chileans in good spot for a Top 2 placing in Pool A.

Following their win over Trinidad and Tobago, Cuba came out of the gate firing. Their fearless pressure made it difficult for Chile to settle their possession. Neither team had quality chances through the opening quarter until the 14th minute when Chile got their first penalty corner. Renz stepped up to the top of the battery and flicked the ball low to rattle the back boards and lift Chile 1-0. Cuba had their chance on the next rush the other way but the penalty corner flick from Iraidys Calderón was stymied by the pads of Chilean keeper Adrián Henriquez.

Renz doubled the lead for Chile in the 17th minute with another penalty corner flick, this time beating Henriquez high glove side. Cuba’s Carlos Manuel Consuegra generated most of Cuba’s attack with balls flying past the far post or bouncing in front of the goal but no Cuba players there to touch it. Captain Maikel Tritzant Jardines did well to organize a block of Cuban players up the middle, while Chile continued to be patient for their moments.

In the 36th minute Felipe Pizarro self-started on a long corner and blasted the ball in to the Cuba circle. Sven Richter was there for the perfect deflection in to the mesh to send Chile up 3-0. Cuba earned a penalty corner in the 43rd minute but Wildfredo Sanchez Reyez had his low shot saved by Henriquez. Tritzant Jardines had what seemed an open chance to score in the final seconds of the quarter but too many touches allowed Chile to clear the ball.

Cuba keeper Hernandez denied two more Chile penalty corners late in the game as Cuba pressed to get on the board. A long aerial from Juan Amoroso sailed over the Cuba defence line and found the stick of Martin Rodriguez. Hernandez came out to challenge and Rodriguez calmly tapped it to Vicente Goni Hartard for the fourth and final goal.
