El partido final del primer día de la competencia de hockey masculino de los Juegos Panamericanos de Hockey lo disputaron EEUU y Cuba. Ambos equipos pelearon por la posesión para abrir el primer tiempo. Cuba tuvo más la posesión en el ataque, pero la defensa de EE.UU se mantuvo fuerte para evitar que su rival marcara. Hacia la mitad del primer tiempo, Cuba se lanzó a la ofensiva y ganó su primer corner corto del partido en el minuto 18. El corner corto fue boqueado por el cuerpo de un defensor de EE.UU, por lo que se otorgó un tiro penal. El cubano Heriberto SARDUT GOMEZ convirtió y puso a Cuba 1-0 en ventaja. En el resto del primer tiempo Cuba continuó con su presión ofensiva. EE.UU no se rindió, y logró hacerse de un corner corto cuando ya se extinguía el primer tiempo. Un nuevo corner le dio la oportunidad a Will HOLT quien empató el partido 1- 1.

A pocos minutos de comenzado el segundo tiempo, EE.UU tomó la delantera poniendo el marcador 2-1 con otro corner corto convertido por HOLT. Ambos equipos continuaron batallando por la posesión, manteniéndose firme en la defensa para evitar el aumento del marcador. SARDUT GOMEZ empató el partido 2-2 en el minuto 49. Cuba mantuvo su juego en ataque y se puso 3-2 con el gol de Yoandy BLANCO. En el minuto 56 fue el capitán cubano Yuri PEREZ quien le dio la delantera a su equipo poniéndolo en ventaja por dos goles. EE.UU continuó intentando generar un ataque, pero ninguno de los dos equipos logro volver a marcar y Cuba se hizo con la victoria por 4-2.
