Match Report

Cuba pulled off a 3-2 come-from-behind victory over Trinidad and Tobago to wrap up Pool A play. Carlos Consuegra scored two goals, while Roger Aguilera’s blast was the game-winner.

It was a chippy but even affair in the opening half of Trinidad and Tobago against Cuba. In the first quarter Trinidad and Tobago icon Kwan Browne had three penalty corner attempts but was unable to beat Cuba keeper Leordan Hernandez. It was a feisty match up as Cuba’s Iraidys Calderon was sent off with a yellow card just six minutes in after an altercation away from the action.

In the second quarter Cuba’s Aguilera had an open look on his back end but his shot ricocheted off the outside back board. Trinidad and Tobago were finally able to break the deadlock on a penalty corner thanks to Browne picking up his own rebound and finishing with a reverse stick sweep in to the mesh. Down 1-0 Cuba came out with even more fire and were able to even the score on tehri first penalty corner of the game in the 22nd minute. Consuegra released a quick flick in to the bottom corner to even the game 1-1. Both teams had corner opportunities before the half but the game remained a one-all draw heading in to half time.

After a third quarter of miss chances, the game picked up in the final 15 minutes. Triniad and Tobago capitalized on another penalty corner rebound that fell to Mickell Pierre at the pull out spot. Pierre one-timed the ball past Hernandez to give Trinidad and Tobago the 2-1 lead. Moments later in thrilling fashion Consuegra scored his second of the game on a back-hand ripper from a tough angle. Cuba wasted no time taking the lead when Calderon’s pass sent Roger Aguilar one-on-one with Browne. Aguilar was forced wide but his back-hand shot skipped through the pads of Karlos Stephen to give Cuba the lead for the first time, up 3-2.

Trinidad and Tobago had a penalty corner and an open shot for Tariq Marcano but it was not enough as the No. 69-ranked Cuba pull off their first upset since their win in 2015 at an invitational and their shoot-out victory in the final of the Central American and Caribbean Games in 2014. With the 3-2 loss, No. 37-ranked Trinidad and Tobago will have to pull of wins over Chile or Argentina to keep their medal hopes alive.
