I was honoured to represent PAHF at this year’s California Cup and to express our congratulations to the Cal Cup Organizing Committee in reaching the significant milestone of tournament number 40 - quite an accomplishment!!
I actually remember playing in Cal Cup #5! In those days there were quite a number of other hockey tournaments in North America – but where are they today? Either extinct or, at best, continuing in some minimal format.
So, what’s different about Cal Cup? I believe it’s due to the consistency, dedication and vision of the founder, Tom Harris, during this entire period. Now, clearly supported by a great team of helpers (including the extended Harris family), this band of volunteers have shared and supported Tom’s vision to build the Cal Cup brand as it has grown from 6 to 130 teams providing hockey at all levels (social to international; 5 year olds to 70 year olds).
Not only has the Cal Cup helped to develop hockey in the USA (for players, umpires, officials), it has also served this purpose very well for Pan American Hockey with many countries participating over the years. At this year’s event, there were representatives from Argentina, Bermuda, Canada, Mexico and, of course, USA.
One of the aspects of the Cal Cup that makes it successful is the ambience around the whole event making it simply a great place for any hockey enthusiast to be for this weekend. I would encourage PAHF countries, clubs and officials to consider participating in this tournament in future years.
Finally, on behalf of PAHF, I was pleased to recognize Tom Harris during the awards ceremony by presenting him with a commemorative plaque from the PAHF President and Board of Directors.
