In celebration of the 2017 Women's Pan American Cup, in Lancaster, Philafieldhockey.com has partnered with USA Field Hockey and the Pan American Hockey Federation for the Young Journalist Program – an initiative to foster aspiring sports journalists’ passion for writing and field hockey. Interested players submitted information for the opportunity; two players -- Sydney Lippe of Sparks, Md. and Josie Ashton of Chatam, N.J. -- were selected based on the merit of their submissions. The young journalists attended the first game for the U.S. Women’s National Team against Mexico on Saturday, August 5, learned from the Pan American Hockey Federation communications staff of Ali Baggott, Candela Diaz Bustos and Patrick Epsejo and interviewed USA Field Hockey players after the game.
Lippe is a rising junior goalkeeper at Hereford High School. The team captured the Maryland State Championship the last two seasons. Lippe is also a member of TNT Field Hockey Club, which advanced to the 2016 USA Field Hockey National Club Championship. “Both my high school and club teams have brought me great opportunities and experiences that have helped me grow into a stronger athlete,” said Lippe. In her submission for the PhilaFH Young Journalist Program, Lippe noted: “In this day and age, journalism plays a very important role in the everyone’s lives… Journalism fascinates me due to journalists’ ability to shape the minds of the public with gathered and learned information. I am interested in the PhilaFH Young Journalist program because even as a teenager, it challenges me to think about my future and what it takes to get there.”
Ashton is rising eighth grader at Chatham Middle School and also a member of the Chatham FHC, her town’s youth rec program, as well as Rapid Fire Elite FHC where “I play with the most amazing teammates and friends!” Like Lippe, Ashton is a goalkeeper with a passion for the game and for writing. She was the first to volunteer to suit up in goalie pads when her team took turns in the net — and has never looked back. In her submission, Ashton shared: “[This program] would help me break out of my shell and share my writing with other people because I like to look at things from different perspectives, such as in a field hockey game from a goalie’s perspective rather than a field player… I love to write and I love sports!”
