The 2011 FIH Indoor World Cup held in Poznan, Poland, was an incredible experience for all involved. In this edition the PAHF was not only represented by the national teams of Canada (M), the United States (M), Argentina (W) and Uruguay (W), but also by 3 umpires, 3 technical officials (Paula Parks, TD, CAN, Derek Sandison, TO, CAN and Alicia Takeda, Judge, MEX) and Yan Huckendubler (CAN) as Web Officer.
As an umpire, you strive to be the best and umpire the highest level of competition possible. For indoor that means the World Cup, and I can categorically state that this was a thrill of a lifetime. For Wendy Stewart (CAN) and Gus Soteriades (USA) it was their second consecutive World Cup. It was my first World Cup and I can only hope it was not my last. To be a member of a team of officials, the top 12 in the world, was thrilling as well as sobering. The camaraderie was matched only by the level of competition.
One of the professional bonuses to working such an event, aside from umpiring the best indoor players in the world, is being able to work with umpires from different countries. To be counted with the likes of Andy Mair, Gary Simmonds, Roel van Eert and Ged Curran, to name only a few, is to be in the presence of greatness; some of the best the game has ever seen.
Indoor hockey is a fast, emotionally charged and entertaining form of our game, and the PAHF was represented well by not only it's athletes but it's officials.
