The PAHF is proud of Argentina for the success of the World Cup – both on and off the field. The city of Rosario, Argentina hosted the BDO FIH World Cup Women 2010; and what began as a dream around 2003 became a reality. Rosario is about 300km northwest of Buenos Aires and is the third largest city in Argentina.
The BDO FIH World Cup Women 2010 was inaugurated with a spectacular opening ceremony on the 28th of August 2010. In front of a tall monument depicting the Argentine flag, members of the BDO FIH World Cup 2010 organizing committee, representatives of the city of Rosario and of the FIH addressed the audience. Among the speakers were ex-Leona and Rosario native Ayelén Stepnik and PAHF president (and FIH Vice President), Tony Von Ondarza.
One of the largest attended Women’s Hockey World Cup in the history of the event was well organized with great collaboration with the city of Rosario. Argentina was the sole Pan Am representative of the 12 teams that participated in the World Cup. During the event, the stadium was packed with 12,000 roaring fans whenever Argentina played a match making for an electric atmosphere. Rosario native Luciana Aymar was a leading contributor to the team of Argentina, which won the BDO FIH World Cup 2010 with an exciting 3-1 win over the Netherlands in the final. Luciana was also named Player of the Tournament.
Overall the Argentine team played superbly throughout the tournament. Their defense was stellar, their energy in all matches was high and they played with tremendous home nation support. Hockey was also well covered by the media with live TV coverage and many pages of newspaper reports in both the sports and social pages. All Pan American nations can be proud of the Leonas for their conduct and performance at the BDO FIH World Cup 2010.
The PAHF Planning Group took advantage of the prestigious event held in Rosario to hold a planning meeting and also to meet with other hockey officials from the Americas and the world.
