One of Trinidad and Tobago’s longest standing sports clubs, Courts Malvern Sports Club, staged their 3rd Annual Invitational Hockey tournament over the period Thursday 4th to Sunday 7th September, 2014 at the National Hockey Centre in Tacarigua, Trinidad and Tobago. It was the first tournament staged in Trinidad and Tobago to follow the FIH’s Hockey Fives format. The event boasted of regional participation from Georgetown Cricket Club of Guyana and the Cayman Islands Hockey Club, in addition to the several local clubs who embraced the opportunity to experience this new format of the game.
Two hundred and seventy six hockey players between the ages 9-59 participated in five divisions- Championship Men, Women; under 19 Men, Women; Mixed Veterans. The seventy games were strongly contested and participants showed progress over the course of the tournament honing their tactics and skills to produce high scoring and exciting finals.
Two fields were used over the course of the four day competition, with the fitness and hockey skills of all players being tested to the maximum. Feedback from the participants indicated that the new format is welcomed as it is “Board to Board” action and full excitement. The goalkeepers interviewed indicated that the new game has kept them literally on their toes from the first to the final whistles, whilst the spectators thoroughly enjoy the hockey format as the games are allowed to flow with limited stoppages. It would be safe to say that in T&T this format seems to have been embraced by all.
