2010 Indoor Pan American Championship

Barquisimeto, Venezuela – August 9-15

 

Day 4 – Women – 7th place – Chile vs. Peru: 5-4

The 7th place match in the Women’s Indoor Pan American Championship was between Chile and Peru. Chile took a quick 1-0 lead off a penalty corner goal by Captain Karin GUNDENSCHWAGER SAUCA in the first minute. Chile continued to dominate the first half of play with three more goals by GUNDENSCHWAGER SAUCA in the 7th, 10th, and 11th in the minutes, respectively giving them a 4-0 lead over Peru. Peru had a good chance to score in the 12th minute, but Ximena ARDILES’ penalty stroke went past the goal cage. Despite Chile’s dominance in the match, Peru scored to make it 4-1. Possession of the ball was more even in the second half. GUNDENSCHWAGER SAUCA scored her fifth goal of the match to increase Chile’s lead to 5-1. Peru, however, stayed strong in the match and made it 5-2 off a Maria Luisa Delgado field goal in the 25th minute. A penalty stroke by Maria José JORDÁN in the 33rd minute made the score 5-3. Peru continued its attacking momentum and got within one goal off a penalty corner goal by Nancy VIDAL with less than five minutes remaining. Peru nearly tied the match in the 38th minute off a penalty corner, but it was blocked by Chile’s keeper. Thus, behind GUNDENSCHWAGER SAUCA’s five goals, Chile secured 7th place in the Women’s Indoor Pan American Championship.

Day 4 – Women – Semi-final – Uruguay vs. United States: 3-2 (AET)

In the first semi-final of the Women’s Indoor Pan American Championship, Uruguay and the United States played. From the start, the match was a hard fought battle. Uruguay’s Anastásia OLAVE gave her team an early 1-0 lead. The United States’ defense stayed strong and prevented Uruguay from gaining offensive momentum. Uruguay, however, took a 2-0 lead in the 14th minute off a field goal by captain Patrícia CAMPOS. Minutes later, the United States was awarded a corner, but the shot went high above the goal cage. Uruguay continued to have more of the ball position. Yet, with no time remaining in the first half, the United States was awarded a penalty corner from which Ali MCEVOY scored to make the score 2-1 at halftime. One minute into the half, the United States almost tied the match off a penalty corner, but the shot hit the post. Uruguay went back on offense and Isabel OLASO had the United States’ keeper Donna CHUNG beat, but Meredith KIRKPATRICK had a defensive save to keep the score at 2-1. Uruguay had multiple corners in the second half, but had difficulty getting an initial shot off. In the 36th minute, the United States tied the match 2-2 off a lifted penalty corner shot by MCEVOY. Two minutes later, Uruguay was awarded two consecutive penalty corners, but the first was saved by CHUNG and the second Uruguay could not get the shot off. The United States kept possession for the remaining two minutes to send the match into extra time. In the 42nd minute, Uruguay was awarded a penalty corner, but the lifted shot went just left of the goal cage. With either team unable to score, the match went into a second five minute period of extra time. In the 47th minute, Uruguay received a penalty corner and Carolina MUTILVA scored giving Uruguay the victory and spot in the Championship match.

Day 4 – Women – Semi-final – Argentina vs. Trinidad and Tobago: 4-2

The second semi-final for the Women’s Pan American Championship was between Argentina and Trinidad and Tobago. The first half was a fast paced and even match. Trinidad and Tobago scored first off a Cristina ABREU-COCKBURN field goal in the 4th minute. Argentina tied the match 1-1 when Julia GOMES FANTASIA scored. The match was quickly 2-2 off goals by Trinidad and Tobago’s Yesenia LUCES and Argentina’s Agostina MENDEZ in the 12th and 14th minutes, respectively. The second half began with Argentina receiving a penalty corner in the 21st minute. Maria Mercedes PAZ scored off the penalty corner, giving Argentina the 3-2 lead over Trinidad and Tobago. While the fast pace of the match remained, Argentina started to control the match and dominate the possession of the ball. Argentina went ahead by two goals after a PAZ field goal. Behind keeper Sarayahu PLAZA, the Trinidad and Tobago defense prevented Argentina from capitalizing off many more attacking opportunities. With one minute remaining, Trinidad and Tobago substituted PLAZA with a kicking back. Yet, Trinidad and Tobago was unable to score further. With the 4-2 victory, Argentina secured the other spot in the Championship final against Uruguay.

 

Day 4 – Women – 5th place – Canada vs. Venezuela: 3-0

Canada and host Venezuela played for fifth place in the Women’s Indoor Pan American Championship. While Canada dominated most of the possession in the first half, Venezuela’s defense held strong. Canada was unable to score Amanda WOODCROFT scored a field goal in the 17th minute. With no time remaining in the first half, WOODCROFT scored a penalty corner goal that put Canada ahead 2-0 over Venezuela at halftime. Host Venezuela continued their strong defensive play in the second half. Midway through the second half, Canada took a 3-0 lead off a penalty corner goal by Angela Lancaster in the 28th minute. Despite numerous attacking opportunities, Canada was held scoreless for the rest of the match. With the final score 3-0, Canada and host Venezuela won fifth and sixth place, respectively, in the Women’s Indoor Pan American Championship.
