The Trinidad and Tobago Hockey Board held its Schools and Youth Awards for 2014 at the Indoor Arena of the Eastern Regional sports complex on Saturday.

Mr. Tobias Ottley (Executive Manager of the Elite Development and Performance Unit at SPORTT) and Mr. Roger Daniel (T&T Olympian in the sport of shooting) were on hand to address the crowd of young and enthusiastic players emphasizing the need for a holistic approach to playing sports. Both speakers urged players to maintain their focus on and off the field of play stressing that mental preparation plays a big part in overall performance in all sports.

Holy Name Convent (Secondary Schools Outdoor) and Providence Girls (Secondary Schools Indoor) were the top performing female teams for the year while QRC (Secondary Schools Outdoor) and Fatima College (Secondary Schools Indoor) took home the most accolades in the male divisions.

Dana-Lee De Gannes (Providence) overcame competition from Brianna Govia (Holy Name), Zene Henry (SEPoS), teammate Samantha Olton, and Felicia King (SEPoS) to be named the Female Schools player of the year.

Kelon Skerrit (SEPoS) put in some outstanding performances for his school and was voted Male Schools player of the year ahead of Jordan Reynos (QRC), Jordan Vieira (Fatima), Ackeem Benjamin (Debe), and Jarryon Paul (CIC).

Minor League tournaments were held for Secondary Schools new to the TTHB's youth Development programme and winners were as follows:
- North / West zone - Corpus Christi (Female), Diego Martin Central (Male)
- East Zone - St. Augustine Girls High School (Female), El Dorado East Secondary (Male)
- South/Central zone - Debe Secondary (Male)

Not to be left out the TTHB held a Primary Schools tournament for East Zone schools and Arima Centenary were winners in both Male and Female divisions with Kaya Edwards (Female) and Nicholas Whiteman (Male) leading their respective teams to victory.

Next the Development, Schools and Youth committees will host Skills Awards testing for both Primary and Secondary Schools in May along with a Teachers workshop to give teachers basic knowledge in the sport. Additionally there will be First Aid courses for coaches needing to renew their First Aid certificates.
