2010 Indoor Pan American Championship

Barquisimeto, Venezuela – August 9-15

 

Day 3 – Women – Pool A – Canada vs. Uruguay: 2-3

The first match on the last day of pool play was between Uruguay and Canada; the two top positions in Pool A. The match began with Canada having more possession of the ball. In the 7th minute, the first penalty corner of the match was awarded to Canada. Canada’s initial shot was blocked by a Uruguay defender; that resulted in a penalty stroke. Kristen SHIER scored the penalty stroke to give Canada the 1-0 lead over Uruguay. In the 13th minute, Uruguay received their first penalty corner of the match, but the shot was blocked by Canada’s Ali LEE. Four minutes later, Uruguay was awarded another penalty corner from which Camila DE MARIA scored to tie the match 1-1. With no time remaining in the first half, Uruguay had a chance to take the lead, but Carolina MUTILVA’s shot was again blocked by LEE; keeping the halftime score at 1-1. A couple minutes into the second half, Jessica BUTTINGER gave Canada a 2-1 lead over Uruguay from a push at the top of the circle. Uruguay countered with two penalty corners, but could not convert. In the 30th minute, Uruguay’s Isabel OLASO tied the match 2-2. Right after, Canada was awarded a penalty corner, but LEE’s shot went high above the goal. Uruguay countered and received their own penalty corner; and MUTILVA’s shot gave Uruguay their first lead of the match at 3-2. With three minutes remaining in the match, Canada’s Angela LANCASTER received a yellow card. In the last minute, Canada substituted their keeper for a kicking back, but Uruguay held on for the 3-2 victory and kept its top spot in Pool A.

Day 3 – Women – Pool B – Chile vs. United States: 0-9

In the match between Chile and the United States, Chile was still looking for its first win in the tournament. From the beginning, however, the United States dominated the match and was awarded its first penalty corner in the opening minutes. After many penalty corners, the United States scored first off a field goal by Alison BLANKMEYER. The United States kept up their attacking pressure and Jennifer MATHIS scored to give the United States a two goal lead over Chile with 7 minutes remaining. Chile’s defense stayed strong and prevented the United States from scoring again; keeping the 2-0 score at halftime. The United States continued to dominate the match on attack in the second half. Behind keeper Mariana Navarro HILDEBRANDT, Chile’s defense continued to prevent the United States from scoring off many of its penalty corners. Yet, the United States quickly went ahead 5-0 over Chile from a penalty corner goal by Ali MCEVOY and Katherine GERZABEK; and a penalty stroke goal by MCEVOY. The United States substituted starting keeper Donna CHUNG with Megan BOTTERI. With over ten minutes remaining in the match, the Untied States went ahead 6-0 off another goal by GERZABEK. A goal from Deanna DICROCE and another by MATHIS increased the United States’ lead to 8-0. With under three minutes left, the United States pulled BOTTERI with Kimberly SUSKO as a kicking back. Following an obstructed penalty corner shot by the United States, GERZABEK’s penalty stroke made the score 9-0. With no time remaining, Chile’s defense blocked a final United States penalty corner and the match ended in a 9-0 victory for the United States.

Day 3 – Women – Pool A – Peru vs. Trinidad and Tobago: 0-4

 In the final Pool A match, Peru and Trinidad and Tobago played. Less than thirty seconds into the match, Blair WYNNE scored for Trinidad and Tobago. Trinidad and Tobago went ahead 2-0 in the 8th minute off a field goal by Gayle Ann NIEVES. In the 13th minute, Peru received its first penalty corner of the match, but the shot was blocked by Peru’s keeper Chiara CONETTA. . Trinidad and Tobago continued to dominate the match on the attack. Kecia JONES scored a field goal in the 18th minute to give Trindad and Tobago a 3-0 lead at halftime. In the second half, Peru’s defense kept strong and prevented Trinidad and Tobago from scoring of its many attacking opportunities. Yesenia LUCES scored Trinidad and Tobago’s fourth goal in the 33rd minute. While Peru’s defense remained strong, Peru was not able to score in the match. Thus, the match ended with a 4-0 win for Trinidad and Tobago.

Day 3 – Women – Pool B – Argentina vs. Venezuela: 5-0

In the last match on day three of the Women’s Indoor Pan American Championship, Argentina played host Venezuela. Argentina was looking to win Pool B, while host Venezuela was still looking for its first tournament win. The match began as a hard fought battle between the two teams. Argentina scored first off a penalty corner in the 7th minute. Two minutes later, Emma YANZI scored a goal for Argentina. With either team able to score in the rest of the half, the halftime score was 2-0 in favour of Argentina. In the second half, Argentina began to control the match and have great ball possession. Argentina increased their lead to 4-0 with two quick goals in the 24th and 27th minutes by Augstina GONZALEZ MINGUEZ and Julia GOMES FANTASIA. Venezuela’s defense remained strong and prevented another Argentina score until the 34th minute; that made the score 5-0. While Venezuela prevented another Argentina score, they were not able to score. Thus, with its 5-0 victory over host Venezuela, Argentina secured the top spot in Pool B.
