2010 Indoor Pan American Championship

Barquisimeto, Venezuela – August 9-15

 

Day 4 – Men – Pool A – Guyana vs. Peru: 4-2

On the first game on day four of the Men’s Indoor Pan American Championship Guyana and Peru played. Guyana was coming off its big win over host Venezuela that was the last game on day three. Guyana scored first around the 6th minute of play, but Peru quickly tied the match off a penalty corner goal. Following another penalty corner that Peru was unable to convert, Guyana made it 2-1. While Peru had more attacking opportunities in the first half, Guyana took a 3-1 lead off a field goal following a turn-over by Peru in the midfield; that remained at half-time. The second half began with possession even between both teams. Peru received multiple corners, but could not score from them. Midway through the second half, Robert FRANCE of Guyana had Peru’s keeper Felix MAFFERETTI beat but the shot crossed the entire length of the goal. Peru continued to not capitalize off penalty corners. FRANCE continued to look for attacking opportunities; and scored around the 35th minute that put Guyana ahead of Peru 4-1. A couple minutes later, Peru scored off another penalty corner to bring them within two goals. With two minutes remaining, Peru pulled MAFFERETTI for a kicking back; and soon received another penalty corner. With either team unable to score again, Guyana won its second match of the tournament 4-2 over Peru.

 

Day 4 – Men – Pool B – Trinidad and Tobago vs. United States: 3-3

The match between Trinidad and Tobago and the United States was an aggressive battle for the top of Pool B. While the United States received the first penalty corner of the match, Trinidad and Tobago scored first to go ahead 1-0 off a Mickell PIERRE field goal. Play remained even. The United States had a handful of attacking opportunities from which they could not score. With five minutes remaining in the half, Wayne LEGERTON scored to give Trinidad and Tobago a 2-0 lead that remained at halftime. At the start of the second half, the United States took their time-out and came out and scored off a penalty corner by Thomas KRAUSS to make it 2-1. The United States’ captain, Patrick COTA was awarded a penalty stroke and scored to tie the match 2-2. Trinidad and Tobago quickly received a penalty corner, but it was defended well by the United States. Midway through the second half, Raphael GOVIA of Trinidad and Tobago scored off a lifted penalty corner shot. Less than a minute later, KRAUSS scored again that again tied the match, now at 3-3. With five minutes remaining, the United States was awarded another penalty stroke; but the stroke by Sean HARRIS went wide right. In the final minute, LEGERTON had his shot go wide; and the United States had a penalty corner shot blocked by Trindad and Tobago’s keeper. As a result, the match ended in a 3-3 draw and the United States moved to the top of Pool B (based on more “goals for” than Trinidad and Tobago).

 

Day 4 – Men – Pool A – Argentina vs. Canada: 1-4

Argentina and Canada played the last match on day four of the Men’s Indoor Pan American Championship. Canada came out dominating possession and scored two goals (by Sean BARRETTO and Jonathan ROBERTS) within the first ten minutes of the match. Down two goals, Argentina looked to generate attack and had shots blocked by the Canadian defense. Midway through the first half, Argentina had a good opportunity to score off a penalty corner, but was unable to capitalize. Canada continued to assert their dominance and after a series of penalty corners; and Adam ALI scored their third goal of the match. Thus, Canada led 3-0 at halftime. In the second half, Argentina had a few penalty corners, but could not score. Canada scored again in the 28th minute to go ahead 4-0 over Argentina. With one minute remaining in the match, Adriano BUSATTO scored for Argentina off a penalty corner; making the final score 4-1 in favour of Canada. Canada’s victory over Argentina earned them the top spot in Pool A.
