CAH President Daniel Marcellini with newly appointed Las Leonas coach Marcelo Garaffo

The Confederación Argentina de Hockey (Argentinean Hockey Confederation) has announced the coaching staff that will oversee the management of the Argentina women’s hockey team.

Marcelo Garaffo has been confirmed as the new head coach of the current world champions and Olympic silver medallists, taking over the reins after a hugely successful three year stint from Carlos Retegui. Garaffo is former captain of Argentina men, a team that he has also coached in past years.

A noteworthy name on the list of team staff is that of team manager Magdalena Aicega, a true icon of Argentinean hockey. Aicega was a member of the Leonas team that won Gold at the 2002 World Cup and captained the team to a Bronze medal at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, her farewell tournament.

The assistant coaches for the team are Claudio Junquet and Fernando Ferrara. Junquet is a former assistant with the Argentinean men’s team while ex-Argentina men’s international Ferrara worked as the head coach of the Italian national team.

The Leonas are scheduled to resume training on in February ahead of a test series against New Zealand in Rosario.
