After three days of play, the Pool Play of the Pan American Games Women’s Competition is now complete. Argentina and the United States sit atop Pools A and B, both with nine points, respectively; while Canada and Chile are ranked second in Pools A and B each with six points. Argentina had three dominating wins over the other teams in its Pool, while the United States’ narrow 2-1 victory over Chile helped secure it a spot in the Semi-Final. Thus, within these Pan American countries, both sets of neighbors will play each other the Semi-Final round—with Argentina and Chile meeting in one Semi-Final and the United States and Canada in the other Semi-Final.
The Semi-finals and the matches to decide 5th-8th place matches will be held on Wednesday October 26th, 2011.
Leading the scoring for Argentina are the top three scorers in the tournament thus far: Noel BARRIONUEVO, who is the top goal scorer of the tournament thus far with eight goals (all of her signature penalty corner shot), Soledad GARCIA (7 goals), and Carla REBECCHI (6 goals). Chile will rely on a variety of players in its matchup against the defending Pan American Games Champions.
Both the United States and Canada have a number of players who have scored multiple goals thus far in the tournament, including Claire LAUBACH and Caroline NICHOLS for the United States; and Brienne STAIRS and Thea CULLEY for Canada.
Thus, battling it out for the final matches to decide the 5th through 8th place tournament spots will be Barbados versus Mexico in one match; and Cuba and Trinidad & Tobago in the other match. Both Mexico and Trinidad & Tobago will be looking for their first Pan American Games tournament win.
