The first Semifinal match on Day 4 of the Men’s Competition of the Pan American Games was between Canada and Cuba. In the first minute, Canada’s Matthew GUEST sent a strike from the side of the circle that gave Canada the early 1-0 lead over Cuba. Soon after, Scott TUPPER scored a penalty corner goal to make it a 2-0 Canada versus Cuba score. Cuba did not let up, however, and also scored on its first penalty corner of the match in the 14th minute to make it a 2-1 score. Canada increased their lead to 3-1 off a Sukhwinder SINGH strike from the top of the circle in the 21st minute. Canada’s Richard HILDRETH received a green card in the 24th minute. Cuba quickly increased its offensive pressure and possession, but could not manage to score another goal before the half. Thus, the halftime score remained Canada 3, Cuba 1.
Both Canada and Cuba came out with intensity in the second half and battled each other for possession. Cuba’s Roberto Carlos LEMUS DOMINGUEZ scored in the 49th minute to decrease Canada’s lead to 3-2. Throughout the rest of the second half, both teams continued to fight for possession and hold strong on defense. Cuba nearly tied the score in the 68th minute, but a hard shot that went in was taken from outside the circle. With either team able to score again in the second half, the final score remained Canada 3, Cuba 2. Thus, Canada earned a spot in the Final match, while Cuba will play in the third and fourth place match.
