Match Report

In the Women’s Final of the Pan American Games, Argentina and USA played. The match started with both teams fighting for possession and keeping each other largely out of their attacking ends. Argentina earned the first penalty corner of the match, but could not convert. Immediately after, the United States scored the first goal of the match off a Paige Selenski field goal in the 14th minute. The United States kept up their attacking pressure and increased their lead to two goals off a Shannon TAYLOR field goal in the 16th minute. Argentina soon decreased this lead and BARRIONUEVO scored a penalty corner goal in the 19th minute. For the rest of the half, Argentina dominated possession, but the United States’ defense held strong with saves by keeper Jackie KINTZER. Yet the United States persisted and in the final minute received their first penalty corner of the match. The United States’ Katie O’DONNELL tipped in the penalty corner and the halftime score was USA 3, Argentina, 1.

Both teams came out with intensity in the second half. And both had attacking opportunities early in the second half. Yet, both Argentina’s keeper Belen SUCCI and KINTZER made saves to keep the score at 3-1 USA versus Argentina.  In the 42nd minute, Argentina earned the first penalty corner of the second half and again BARRIONUEVO scored off a corner to cut the USA’s lead to one goal. In the 47th minute, the United States’ Michelle KASOLD received a yellow card. Yet, Argentina could not take advantage and the score remained United States 3, Argentina 2 during this period. Argentina earned another penalty corner in the 55th minute, but KINTZER saved the shot. The United States earned their first penalty corner of the second half in the 62nd minute, but did not complete the play. The United States continued to their attacking pressure and went ahead 4-2 over Argentina off a field goal by Michelle VITESSE in the 66th minute. With either team able to score another goal in the final minutes, the final score remained United States 4, Argentina 2. Thus, the United States earned the goal medal in the Pan American Games Women’s Competition and a 2012 Olympic berth; while Argentina emerged with the silver medal.
