In the match to decide seventh and eighth place of the Pan American Games Women’s Competition Caribbean nations Barbados and Trinidad & Tobago played. In Pool play, Barbados beat Trinidad & Tobago by a score of 4-2. Trinidad & Tobago was still looking for its first tournament win. Both teams came out fighting for possession from the start. Trinidad & Tobago earned the first penalty corners of the match, but could not convert. But Blair WYNNE‘s field goal in the 24^th minute put Trinidad & Tobago ahead of Barbados. Immediately after the restart, however, Barbados’ Charlia WARNER tied the match. Trinidad & Tobago soon took back the lead off a field goal by Kristin THOMPSON in the 29^th minute. Right before halftime, WYNNE gave her team a 3-1 lead off a penalty corner goal. And the score remained Trinidad & Tobago 3, Barbados 1 at halftime.

In the second half, Trinidad & Tobago came out on the attack and kept up their offensive intensity for much of the half. Behind keeper Lana ALS, Barbados’ defense held strong and blocked a series of penalty corners by Trinidad & Tobago early in the second half. Barbados kept fighting and earned a few penalty corners later in the second half, but could not capitalize. With both teams playing strong defense the score remained Trinidad & Tobago 3, Barbados 1 at the end of the match. Thus, Trinidad & Tobago earned seventh place and Barbados eighth place in the Pan American Games Women’s Competition, respectively.

It was a nice game. We were more focused and much better today. And we had more goals.

On finishing in seventh place…

I think it is still a good opportunity and still important as well that we now qualify to an Olympic Qualifier. We could not get to the medal round, but it is still important to go to a Qualifier and now we have time to train and get better.

On this (second) match against Barbados…

We were more disciplined and more organized. We watched a lot of video and discussed it in our meetings. We wanted to work on our defense and I thought we played much better on defense today and intercepted well when we needed to and that was the difference.
