In the second mens quarter final, Chile and Cuba played. The intensity of the match was felt from the start. Both teams battled for possession in the midfield throughout the beginning of the first quarter. Chile earned the first penalty corners of the match in the 8th minute, but Cuba’s keeper Leordan Hernandez made a great save to keep the match scoreless. Sebastian Kapsch and Martin Rodriguez kept looking to attack down Chile’s right side of the pitch, but Cuba’s Dani Alonso and Adrian Molina played strong defense to hold off their attack. Cuba earned its first penalty corner of the match in the 14th minute. Yoandy Blanco once again proved his penalty corner scoring ability by sending a hard drag flick in the low left corner past Chile’s keeper Adrian Henriquez. Blanco’s goal made the score Chile 0, Cuba 1 that remained the score at the end of the first quarter.
Much of the second quarter was an even more intense battle for possession. Both teams kept trying to move on attack, but both played strong defense to keep play concentrated in the midfield of the pitch. In the 25th minute, Chile’s Sven Richter had a shot saved by Hernandez that resulted in the first penalty corner of the second quarter. Cuba’s defense broke up Chile’s penalty corner play and Cuba ran fast near to their attacking circle. Cuba could not get a shot off and with both teams still battling for possession the score at halftime remained Chile 0, Cuba 1.
From the start of the third quarter Chile looked to go on attack, but Cuba played strong defense that forced Chile to pass throughout the midfield. In the 34th minute, Cuba’s Darien Valero received a green card and Chile took advantage to get closer near its attacking circle. In the 38th minute, Chile’s attack was able to penetrate its attacking circle and Alexis Berczely got a shot past Hernandez to tie the match Chile 1, Cuba 1. In the 42nd minute, Chile earned a penalty corner, but Hernandez made a good glove save to prevent Chile from taking the lead in the match. In the 43rd minute, Richter ran all the way down the pitch and took the hard shot himself at the top of the circle to give Chile the 2-1 lead over Cuba.
Chile’s attacking intensity from the end of the third quarter carried through into the fourth quarter as Fernando Renz scored in the 46th minute. One minute later, Vincente Martin put in a fast penalty stroke to give his team a three goal lead over Cuba; making the score Chile 4, Cuba 1. In the 50th minute, Cuba had their first attacking opportunity of the quarter. Maikel Tritzant sent a hard shot on goal, but it was saved by Henriquez. A minute later, Cuba had their first penalty corner of the fourth quarter. Tritzant’s shot trickled into goal to make the score Chile 4, Cuba 2 in the 51st minute. Two minutes later, Cuba had another penalty corner, but Henriquez blocked Blanco’s low shot. Cuba continued to pressure on attack, but Chile regained possession and earned another penalty corner in the 57th minute. Rodriguez collected the rebound off the initial shot blocked by Hernandez to make the score Chile 5, Cuba 2. In the 59th minute, Chile had another penalty corner, but Hernandez saved the shot. Cuba ran back fast on attack, but could not capitalize. Then it was Chile back fast on attack and Martin had his second goal of the match as he just tapped the ball in while running to make it Chile 6, Cuba 2 in the 60th minute. Thus, the final result was Chile 6, Cuba 2 and Chile advances to the semifinal against Argentina.
