Match Report

The third mens quarterfinal was between United States and Brazil. The United States went on the attack early and earned the first penalty corner of the match in the third minute. Brazil’s keeper Rodrigo Faustino made the save and both teams continued to battle for possession in the midfield. In the 6th minute, Brazil earned a penalty corner, but the shot was blocked by United States’ keeper Christopher Rea. The United States then had one shot go high of the goal cage and with play remaining in the midfield for the rest of the first quarter the first quarter ended scoreless.

Five minutes into the second quarter both teams continued to challenge other. The United States penetrated its attacking circle a few more times than Brazil, but Brazil’s defense was there each time to quickly clear the ball out. In the 23rd minute, Brazil had a shot on goal, but it went wide. The United States then earned a penalty corner in the 24th minute. Aki Kaeppeler lifted the ball, but Faustino was there for the save. Brazil’s Matheus Borges sent the ball into Brazil’s attacking end and Brazil continued to attack. Kaeppler broke up the run by Lucas Paixao. Soon after, in the 30th minute, the United States’ Captain Pat Harris had a shot go wide. Thus, the match remained United States 0, Brazil 0 at halftime.

The third quarter started with Harris running fast on attack a couple of times, but each time Brazil’s good team defense forced the United States to pass the ball away from its attacking circle and into the midfield. Patrick van der Heijden played good attack and defense in the midfield that led to a United States turnover and then a penalty corner for Brazil in the 34th minute. Borges sent in the flick past Rea to give Brazil the lead over United States and end the match from being scoreless. One minute later, Brazil immediately earned another penalty corner, but Rea was there for the save. In the 37th minute, Alex Cunningham had a shot for United States, but Faustino and Bruno Sousa defended well. The United States continued to pressure on attack and Kaeppeler also had a shot blocked by multiple Brazilian defenders. The United States continued to pressure on attack, but Sousa, Stephane Smith and Faustino continued to lead an incredible team defensive effort to keep the United States from getting more shots off in the third quarter. Thus, the score remained United States 0, Brazil 1.

In the fourth quarter, most of the play occurred in the United States’ attacking half. Brazil continued to play incredibly strong defense to prevent the United States from again penetrating their attacking circle. In the 52nd minute Faustino made two more big saves to preserve Brazil’s lead. In the 55th minute, Brazil’s Luis Reus received a yellow card. The United States took advantage as Tyler Sundeen put the ball past Faustino in the 57th minute to tie the match making it United States 1, Brazil 1. Then in the 58th minute Lucas Paixao received a yellow card. While faced with two yellow cards, Brazil’s defense held off the United States attack such that the result at the end of regulation was United States 1, Brazil 1.

Thus, the quarterfinal match went into a penalty shoot out. Lucas Paixao went first on the shoot out that resulted in a stroke and Luis Reus put it in. Harris then went for the United States and the ball went wide. Yuri van der Hejiden then scored for Brazil, while Moritz Runzi missed. Then Sousa scored for Brazil; and Christian Linney put one in for United States. Patrick vander Hejiden missed and then Alex Cunningham missed for the United States. Thus, Brazil emerged as the winners (3-1 in the shoot-out) to advance to the semifinal round.
