Match Report

In the first mens quarter final match, Argentina and Mexico played. Argentina asserted themselves on the attack early when Manuel Brunet’s goal gave his team the lead in the second minute. Five minutes later, Peillat converted Argentina’s first penalty corner with his hard flick into the lower left corner of the cage to make the score Argentina 2, Mexico 0. After the restart, Mexico briefly had the ball in their attacking end, but Argentina regained possession after a missed shot. Argentina continued to pressure on attack. Mexico’s keeper Moises Vargas blocked two more penalty corner shots by Argentina in the 11th minute. In the 14th minute Mexico again was able to have the ball in their attacking circle, but lost the ball off the endline. With Mexico’s defense holding off Argentina in the final minute of the first quarter, the score remained Argentina 2, Mexico 0.

Argentina’s Captain Matias Paredes quickly gave his team a three goal lead to start the second quarter. Then in the 20th minute Luca Vila’s goal made the score Argentina 4, Mexico 0. In the 26th minute Mexico had their first attacking opportunity in the second quarter, but Argenis Vasquez lost the ball off the endline. Mexico quickly went back on attack, but Alexis Campillo swung and missed the ball, giving Argentina back the possession. Argentina rushed back on attack and Peillat pushed the ball past Vargas to give his team a five goal lead in the 28th minute. Argentina earned a penalty corner in the 30th minute and once again Peillat put in a drag flick, this time high, to make the score Argentina 6, Mexico 0 at the halftime break.

Argentina scored even faster to start the third quarter than they did the first. After a few quick passes Lucas Villa scored his second goal of the match in the first 33 seconds of the third quarter to make the score Argentina 7, Mexico 0. Argentina kept pressuring on attack and Juan Gilardi converted a penalty stroke in the 39th minute. Villa then found Paredes who scored his second goal of the match also in the 39th minute to make the score Argentina 9, Mexico 0.

Mexico played good defense to prevent another Argentina goal until the fourth quarter in the 51st minute when Vila scored his third goal of the match to give his team a ten goal lead. Five minutes later Agustin Mazzilli’s goal made the score Argentina 11, Mexico 0. In the 58th minute, Vargas made three big saves to keep Argentina from increasing their lead.  In the 59th minute, however, Peillat scored his fourth goal of the match off another penalty corner drag flick. With another save by Vargas the final score of the match remained Argentina 12, Mexico 0.
