Match Report

Brazil and Uruguay played in the second women’s game of Day 4. Uruguay came out on attack early, and earned the first penalty corner of the match a few minutes into the match , but it was blocked by  Brazil’s keeper Andrea GOMES BERNARDES. Play continued to be in Uruguay’s attacking half for much of the first half. Uruguay received a number of penalty corners in the first half, but as Brazil’s defense held strong, they were unable to score off of them. Uruguay finally broke through the Brazilian defense in the 25th minute off a field goal by Teresa VIANA. Immediately after the restart, VIANA scored again to make the score 2-0 in favor of Uruguay. The Brazil defense continued to withstand Uruguay’s pressure and the score remained 2-0 at halftime.

Brazil came out on attack to start the second half and only a few minutes in had earned their first penalty corner of the match. Uruguay’s keeper Rossana PASELLE made a great stick save to keep Brazil off the scoreboard.  With Uruguay still controlling most of the match, Brazil spent most of the second half on defense. However, Brazil’s defense prevented any more goals from Uruguay in the second half; even after, Brazil’s Patricia BOOS received a yellow card in the 65th minute. Thus, the final score remained 2-0 in favor of Uruguay.

MATCH QUOTES

Uruguay’s Coach Gonzalo FERRER

On the match…

I am content. I thought we generated chances and played as a team. We also were more aggressive when we needed to be and defended well. We are a team that is showing more and more our identity—not just as hockey players or Uruguayans—but about our identity as Uruguayan hockey players and how to play Uruguayan hockey.

Uruguay’s Captain Patricia CAMPOS

On the match…

I am very happy with the result and how Uruguay played. We have one step more until the Final match and I want to get to the final.

On the difference between the first and second halves…

Brazil played very intense and aggressive in the first half, while Uruguay was more calm. In the second half, I think we took away Brazil’s chances and continued to play our game.

Brazil’s Coach Eduardo MARTINS JR

On Brazil’s experience throughout the tournament…

We are gaining more and more experience. And are still learning the game and our rhythm as well as the little things we need to learn. With each game we improve.

Brazil’s Captain Djeniffer DOMBROWICZ VASQUES

On the match…

In the first halve we pressured more and in the second half I thought we improved, but so did Uruguay. We did a good job of defending Uruguay’s short corners to prevent them from scoring off of them. So I thought we did really good and I am content with the match. We continue to grow and we know we need to score more than Guyana to get to the final.
