Match Report

For Days 5 and 6 of the 2011 Pan Am Challenge the first match of the day was the Men’s match. Thus, under beautiful sunny skies, Day 5 of the Pan Am Challenge began with a matchup between the Uruguayan and Paraguayan men. In the first minute, Paraguay went onto attack and immediately earned a penalty corner. Paraguay’s Julio RUSSO PEDRO converted the penalty to make the score 1-0 over Uruguay. RUSSO PEDRO‘s goal was Paraguay’s first goal of the Pan Am Challenge and Uruguay’s first goal against of the tournament. Uruguay then pressured hard on attack. Paraguay’s keeper Paolo BELLO CANETE and the Paraguayan defense could only hold off so many penalty corner opportunities. Five minutes later, Juan Manuel CANESSA’s penalty corner went in to tie the match 1-1.

Uruguay then continued to hold the majority of possession and maintain pressure on the attack. Off a crossed ball, Uruguay’s Mateo PEREIRO deflected the ball off the left post to give his team the 2-1 lead over Paraguay in the 13th minute. Despite Paraguay’s hard work on defense, Uruguay’s Federico INGLESIAS penalty corner goal made the score 3-1 four minutes later. While Paraguay was unable to score again in the half they held off Uruguay to keep the score still 3-1 at halftime.

In the second half, Uruguay continued to control the match and dominate possession. Paraguay, however, kept up strong defense and kept Uruguay from scoring for much of the second half. In the 46th minute, Uruguay’s Captain Maximiliano TIXE scored to make the score 4-1. In the 57th minute, Uruguay’s CANESSA scored again on a penalty corner to make it 5-1 over Paraguay. Paraguay continued to try to attack, but could not retain possession long enough to get sound shots off. In the final minute, CANESSA scored a third penalty corner goal to make the final score 6-1, Uruguay over Paraguay.
