LONDON, Ontario, Canada - The last day of the Men's Pan American Cup pool play resumed at University of Western Ontario in London, Canada, in overcast weather, with light rain in the morning.

The round-robin portion of the competition ended with Chile and Trinidad & Tobago overcoming strong challenges from USA and Netherlands Antilles to qualify for the semi-finales, where they'll join Argentina and Canada who have not really been tested so far in the competition.

Chile - USA : 2-1

The early game between Chile and the USA was decisive for both teams, with the winner earning a berth in the semi-finals. It started with a tactical battle in midfield and no serious opportunity until the 10th minute when Gurpal Kundi (USA) had a dangerous deflection saved by Mathias Anwandter. Chile was the first on the score sheet with a penalty corner by their captain Felipe Montegu; US goalkeeper Jason Wellings stopped it but the ball trickled over the line behind him.

The USA reacted quickly and earned a penalty corner; they could not stop it cleanly but Pat Harris managed a nice pass to Jand Badhensha who shot just wide. The USA kept pressuring intelligently, earning a series of penalty corner but the Chilean defense hold tight. Chile managed to push forward towards the end of the period, earning a couple of penalty corners well saved by Jason Wellings, then a penalty stroke on a dangerous raid in the circle by Pablo Kuhlental. Ian Koppenberger made no mistake on the stroke to push the score to 2-0, score at half-time.

With Chile having a comfortable cushion, the USA needed to take the initiative in second period. They generated some dangerous offense but wasted a few golden chances that could have brought them back in the game, including one by Daraspreet Kainth who found himself alone a few meters in front of the Chilean goalkeeper but could not adjust his shot.

After a period of uncertain play, USA earned a series of penalty corners but couldn't convert them. With Chile reduced to 10 players and retreating into a conservative defensive shell, the USA dominated the game for a while and were rewarded by a penalty corner scored by Pat Harris that gave them back some hope.

Unfortunately, they were reduced to ten players on the same play and that allowed Chile to regain some control on the proceedings. They nearly scored by Jorge O'Rayn but his shot was saved on the line by Jang Badhesha covering behind his goalkeeper. The game became chippy and another Chilean player was sent-off but the USA couldn't generate any more chances and Chile celebrated their qualification for the semi-finals.

Trinidad & Tobago - Netherlands Antilles : 4-1

Another decisive game for the qualification in semi-final from pool B. Trinidad & Tobago had the early pressure, earning quickly two penalty-corners cleanly saved by Thomas Kolen in goal. They also had a few opportunities from the field but the Netherlands Antilles defense weathered the storm patiently. The game then settled down in midfield with the Netherlands Antilles progressively pushing up field. They earned two penalty corners in a row, with the second one saved by Kwandwane Browne on the line.

This seemed to boost T&T and they earned another penalty corner on the next play, but Jasper De Gier calmly saved Browne's flick on the line behind his goalkeeper. Trinidad kept pushing and on yet another penalty-corner Dwain Quan Chan opened the scoring. Trinidad & Tobago maintained control of the play for the remainder of the period, although the Netherlands Antilles had a chance to equalize on a series of penalty-corners where they unsuccessfully chose to use new options instead of the powerful flick of Jaap Overgaauw. Score at halt-time: 1-0.

Netherlands Antilles tried to equalize early in the second period, led by Wouter Plantega and Jaap Overgaauw, but they could not generate any clear opportunities. Trinidad & Tobago played an organized game orchestrated by Kwandwane Browne who seemed to be everywhere on the field, defending behind his goalkeeper and penetrating the D at the opposite end! Halfway through the period, T&T scored two goals in a row, first by Dwain Quan Chan on a penalty-corner rebound then by Brian Garcia on a 2-on-1 following a turnover.

With the final result no more in doubt, the game loosened up and Trinidad had most of the play, with Brian Garcia adding a goal. The Netherlands Antilles only managed to react episodically and Tjerk Van de Braak put his team on the score sheet on the 64th minute, but it was too late and Trinidad & Tobago earned a well deserved 4-1 win.

Trinidad & Tobago reaches the semi-final of a Pan American competition for the first time since 1967 when they won the Silver medal at the inaugural Pan Am games.

Brazil - Venezuela : 3-0

After a morning of rain, the sun reappeared to provide a nicer environment for the Brazil - Venezuela game. The game flowed back and forth, with some initial advantage to Venezuela, mainly dangerous by Lucas Piccioli who often managed to open deep breaches in the Brazilian defense with his incisive runs. But it is Brazil who opened the scoring on a penalty-corner by Leonardo Lemos after a superbly executed double layoff.

They nearly scored again a few minutes later on a different and equally well executed penalty corner option. Half-time was reached on the score of 1-0.

Venezuela took the initiative early in the second period but failed to close the gap and it is Brazil who scored by Guido Hock to increase their lead. Venezuela was reduced to 10 players after that play and couldn't contain the Brazilian pressure, allowing them to score a third goal after a classic attack on the right wing centered for Guillermo Berthold who smashed it into goal, triggering an enthusiastic celebration.

It was written that it would be a good day for Brazil, with their goalkeeper making a good glove save on a penalty-stroke later in the period. The game then settled in midfield, with both teams losing their structure and wasting plays by precipitation. The Brazilians celebrated joyfully their first win of the competition that could push them up to fourth place in pool A depending on the result of the Argentina vs. Puerto Rico later in the day.

Argentina - Puerto Rico : 14 - 0

The game was played in front of a very vocal Brazilian delegation cheering loudly for Argentina. Argentina opened the score in the second minute by Tomas MacCormik who batted the ball in the roof of the net. They kept on scoring regularly field goals, penalty corners and penalty strokes. Whatever Puerto Rico tried to push away the danger, the ball seemed to come back instantly, and they had no other option than to pack their defense.

The game rarely went outside of the forty meter and Argentina used the full width of the pitch and their speed to produce a festival of quick and accurate passes, with some spectacular finish, to push up the score up to 8-0 at half-time.

The main interest of the second period was the number of goals that Argentina would end up scoring: 18 or less and Puerto Rico would finish fourth, 19 or more and Brazil would pass them in the standings to grab the fourth place and play for places 4 to 8.

After twenty minutes, Argentina had only scored 4 more goals for a total of 12. This seemed to stimulate the Puerto Rican defense that started to play with a renewed purpose, backed by a good show of Luis Alicea Parrilla in goal who somehow managed to stop all but two goals in the last fifteen minute, despite being constantly bombarded by the Argentinean forwards. The final score was 14-0, with Matias Vila netting 4 and Jorge Lombi adding 3 to his tally, for a total of 20 in the first 5 games in this competition.

Uruguay - Canada : 0-7

The last game of the day was not played with much passion, with most of the play in Uruguay's defensive end. Canada opened the scoring by Wayne Fernandes who picked up the rebound of his own drag flick on a penalty corner, before adding a second, then a third to complete a hat-trick before even ten minutes of play. Score at half-time was 4-0.

With temperature dropping quickly, the game became flat and Canada only scored additional goals by Ken Pereira, Mike Lee and Connor Grimes, to finish at 7-0.
