The final match on Day 3 of the Pan American Games Women’s Competition was between Mexico and Chile. Chile earned the first penalty corners of the match, but could not convert. Throughout much of the first half, Mexico and Chile battled for possession. Chile held more possession in their attacking end, but behind the strong play of Mexico’s keeper CASTILLO MARIN had trouble scoring. Chile had a number of penalty corners late in the first half, but CASTILLO MARIN and the Mexican defense came up with big saves. Mexico also could not capitalize on its attacking opportunities late in the first half. Thus, the match remained scoreless at halftime.
In the second half, play was almost entirely in Chile’s attacking half. Like the first half, Chile earned a number of penalty corners, but Mexico’s defense prevented the goals; and again keeper CASTILLO MARIN made great saves. Mexico had few attacking opportunities and could not manage to score off of them. In the 59th minute, Chile was awarded a penalty stroke, but CASTILLO MARIN again came up big and kept Chile off the scoreboard. Mexico was awarded their first penalty corner of the match around the 60th minute, but could not convert. Immediately after, Chile’s Josefina KHAMIS scored to break the scoreless match and put Chile up 1-0 over crowd-favorite Mexico. For the rest of the match, Chile maintained possession and prevented Mexico from attacking. Thus, the final score remained Chile 1, Mexico nill.
