Match Report

On Day 4 of the Pan American Women’s Competition the first match to determine the first spots in the 5th-8th place matches was between Barbados and Mexico. Mexico was still looking for its first tournament win. Mexico earned the first penalty corner of the match, but it was blocked by Barbados’ defense. Soon after Barbados went on the attack and was awarded a penalty stroke, but Cher KING’s stroke was blocked by Mexico’s keeper Jesús Ahide CASTILLO MARIN. Barbados persisted and less than a minute later, KING scored a field goal after CASTILLO MARIN came far out of net. Thus, Barbados took the 1-0 lead over Mexico in the 13th minute. Despite attacking pressure and penalty corners by both teams in the final minutes of the first half, the halftime score remained Barbados 1, Mexico nill.

Early in the second half, Mexico earned a penalty corner, but it was blocked by Barbados’ keeper Lana ALS. Barbados then looked to attack, but turned the ball over in the midfield. Mexico capitalized as Captain Michel Nallely NAVARRO HERNANDEZ lifted a shot high over ALS to tie the match 1-1 in the 38th minute. Mexico’s CASTILLO MARIN, who changed to a field player in the second half, gave her team the lead in the 42nd minute off a lifted goal. For the majority of the second half, Mexico dominated possession and kept play in their attacking half. Mexico’s Guadalupe MARTINEZ DAUZON increased Mexico’s lead to 3-1 over Barbados in the 64th minute. Mexico continued to control the match and keep Barbados from scoring another goal. Thus, Mexico won 3-1 over Barbados and earned their first tournament victory as well as a spot in the match to decide the 5th and 6th places, respectively.
