Match Report

The final match on Day 2 of the Pan American Women’s Competition was between Canada and Argentina. The match started with a surprising first early goal by Canada’s Thea CULLEY in the 6th minute. Canada continued to pressure, but midway through the first half Argentina asserted their dominance. With two goals by Soledad GARCIA and two goals by Luciana AYMAR in a ten minute span Argentina took a 4-1 lead in the 25th minute. Canada did not let up and in the 30th minute, Hannah HAUGHN pulled Canada within two of Argentina. And then in the final minute of the first half, Canada’s Kate GILLIS cut Argentina’s lead by one to make the score Canada 3, Argentina 4 at the half.

Both teams came out with intensity in the second half. Argentina’s BARRIONUEVO increased the lead to 5-3 off a penalty corner goal in the 41st minute. Canada kept fighting and Canada’s keeper Azelia LIU had big saves to prevent Argentina from increasing their lead even further. Argentina dominated play in the second half. And another penalty corner goal by BARRIONUEVO increased Argentina’s lead over Canada by three in the 53rd minute. Canada’s Tyla FLEXMAN received a yellow card in the 53rd minute; and then Canada’s Thea CULLEY received a yellow card in the 62nd minute. While Argentina continued to dominate possession, Canada held strong despite being down two players midway through the second half. And had moments of possession in their attacking end. Argentina increased their lead in the 63rd minute off a field goal by Carla REBECCHI. With Canada unable to capitalize on its attacking chances in the final minutes of the match, the final score was Argentina 7 and Canada 3.
