Match Report

In the second Women’s match on Day 1 of the Pan American Games, Canada and Barbados played. Canada took an early one goal lead off a Brienne STAIRS field goal. In the 16th minute, Canada’s Captain Katie BAKER made the score 2-0 over Barbados. Canada’s Thea CULLEY made the score 3-0 off a penalty corner in the 20th minute. With Barbados unable to hold off the Canadian offense, STAIRS scored another to give Canada a four goal lead in the 26th minute. Off two quick goals by Kate GILLIS and Hannah HAUGHN respectively, Canada went ahead 6-0 over Barbados with few minutes remaining in the first half. Barbados’ defense held strong to prevent another Canadian goal and the score remained 6-0 Canada over Barbados at the half.

Canada continued their offensive pressure in the second half. And again, like the first half, scored early to go ahead 7-0 over Barbados off a goal by Diana ROEMER. A third goal by STAIRS gave Canada an 8-0 leave over Barbados. Against Canada’s persistent attack, Barbados had trouble maintaining possession long enough into their attacking circle. However, the defense for Barbados successfully kept off the Canadian offensive pressure for a number of minutes. But Canada’s Abigail RAYE made it 9-0 in the 61st minute. In the final minutes, Canada’s CULLEY scored again to make the final score 10-0 for Canada over Barbados.

Match Quotes

Barbados’ Coach Elius FANUS

On the match …

It was our fitness. The other team was faster and better fit and did everything better. Four our small island country where we are unable to tour it will take our girls time to adjust to such a big tournament setting. When you have players with five national caps against opponents with 60 national caps you will tend to see that kind of match on the field.

Barbados’ Captain Dionne CLARKE

On the match…

I agree with what Coach said. I think we still did pretty good. We played hard and as a team. We will take this experience onto the next game and go from there.
