Match Report

The second Women’s match on Day 3 was between Trinidad & Tobago and Canada. Both teams opened the match battling for possession. Trinidad & Tobago earned the first penalty corner of the match in the 7th minute and Arielle RAMCHAND DU QUESNAY gave Trinidad & Tobago the 1-0 lead off the penalty corner goal. Canada had a number of opportunities to tie the match off penalty corners, but could not convert them. Midway through the first half, play was mostly in Canada’s attacking half of the pitch. However, Trinidad & Tobago’s defense prevented Canada from taking many shots and held on to their 1-0 lead at the halftime.

In the second half, play, again, was mostly in Canada’s attacking half. Yet, Trinidad & Tobago continued to hold position and keep Canada from developing scoring opportunities. Later in the second half, Canada earned a number of penalty corners, but Trinidad and Tobago’s keeper Petal DERRY saved a number of shots. Canada continued to dominate possession and play in their attacking half. In the 61st minute, Canada’s Brienne STAIRS tied the match 1-1 off a strike from the top of the circle.  Canada kept up their attacking pressure and in the final minutes of the match, Canada’s Kate GILLIS deflected a ball in net giving Canada the 2-1 lead and eventual win over Trinidad and Tobago.

Match Quotes

Trinidad & Tobago’s Coach Anthony MARCANO

On the match…

I thought it was an excellent game on our part. I thought we did an excellent job of holding our lead. But eventually the pressure from Canada took its toll.

On any changes at halftime…

I wanted to keep the intensity, but also be more patient. I knew they would come out hard.

Trinidad & Tobago’s Captain Petal DERRY

On what the difference between Trinidad & Tobago and Canada was today…

I can’t say there was a difference. One team had to win and they won.
