Match Report

Mexico’s Ana SUAREZ scored two second half goals to erase a 1-0 deficit and help her team claim the bronze medal at the 2014 Central American and Caribbean Games (Women) when they beat Trinidad and Tobago 2-1.

Trinidad and Tobago got off to a flying start when Captain Alanna LEWIS finished off a slick combination in the circle with Kristin THOMPSON to take the lead in the 3rd minute. Trinidad’s early goal jolted Mexico to life and they had a period of sustained possession but with little circle penetration as Trinidad’s defense proved difficult to break down. Blair Wynne got the chance to increase her team’s lead in the 15th minute with a 1v1 versus Mexico’s goalkeeper Jesus CASTILLO who came out smartly to block the shot.

Thereafter Mexico’s forwards, Captain Michel NAVARRO, Ana JUAREZ and Fernanda OVIDEO had Trinidad on the back foot as they tried to get an equalizing goal and on a few occasions goalkeeper Petal DERRY had to come to her team’s rescue.

An inspired Mexico came out in the second half and it was Suarez who found the leveler 2 minutes later. Shortly after that the home team forced goalkeeper DERRY to make a few more crucial stops as they pressed forward looking for the go ahead goal. Trinidad gradually managed to re-group and soon regained the momentum as they had Mexico pegged back in their defensive half for a while.

Mexico however absorbed the pressure and SUAREZ finished off a great move on the left that started in defence to give her team a 2-1 lead the 48th minute. Mexico’s defence was put to the test as Trinidad tried to get back in the game however they were determined not to relinquish their lead and closed out the game with a win.
